Air pollution affects food security in China: taking ozone as an example

Zhaozhong FENG,Xuejun LIU,Fusuo ZHANG

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2015, Volume 2, Issue 2,   Pages 152-158 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2015067

Abstract: Air pollution is becoming an increasingly important environmental concern due to its visible negative impact on human health. However, air pollution also affects agricultural crops or food security directly or indirectly, which has not so far received sufficient attention. In this overview, we take ozone (O ) as an example to analyze the principles and extent of the impact of air pollution on food security in China based on a review of the literature. Current O pollution shows a clear negative impact on food security, causing around a 10% yield decrease for major cereal crops according to a large number of field studies around the world. The mean yield decrease of winter wheat is predicted to be up to 20% in China, based on the projection of future ground-level O concentration in 2020, if no pollution control measures are implemented. Strict mitigation of NO and VOC (two major precursors of O ) emissions is crucial for reducing the negative impacts of ground-level O on food security. Breeding new crop cultivars with tolerance to high ground-level O should receive serious consideration in future research programs. In addition, integrated soil-crop system management will be an important option to mitigate the negative effects of elevated ground-level O on cereal crop production and food quality.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 4,   Pages 474-482 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0089-z

Abstract: A number of ethnic minorities are being distributed in southwest China. Yunnan Province is an area inhabited by multi-ethnic groups. For a long time, the ethnic groups have been interacted by others in the cultural aspect, while retaining their own ethnic traditions. The performances of ethnic groups’ dwelling houses are similar as determined by natural and cultural elements of the same area. This paper mainly analyzes decisive factors behind similar appearances by the way of field research on two minorities, Nu ethnic group and Li-su ethnic group, in the Fugong county, Nujiang Li-su autonomous prefecture. Moreover, the paper tries to summarize the commonality and individuality of the minorities in order to provide useful theoretical reference for the minorities building of new socialist countryside in the future.

Abstract: In order to evaluate the clinical manifestations and outcomes of severe ulcerative colitis (UC), we retrospectivelyreviewed 41 patients with severe UC from 144 consecutively hospitalized UC cases from 1988 to 2004.Of these severe cases, 92.7% (38/41) had pancolitis.Steroids played a main role in the remission of severe UC (61.0%).In conclusion, most of the severe UC patients respond well to drug therapy, but for individuals who are

Virtual reality system of manned maneuvering unit taking into consideration the disturbance from an astronaut

CHENG Jian, FAN Xiu-min, XU An, HONG Xin, HUANG Wei-dong

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2006, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 282-287 doi: 10.1007/s11465-006-0042-y

Abstract: This paper describes a manned maneuvering unit (MMU) virtual reality system. Based on the dynamics/kinematics model of an astronaut equipped with an MMU, a disturbance model of the astronaut s arms under zero gravity conditions is developed. After measuring three initial-position information, the astronaut s arms tracking information is inputted by some tracker setting on an operator using real-time emendation and correction. Finally, the paper presents two different results between loading and unloading the disturbance model within the progress of simulation. From the different results, we find that the motion of an astronaut s arms has greater influence over space walking with the same control mode. The MMU virtual reality provides a new method for the simulation of real space walking, and also a perfect method for developing prototype MMU.
